“In my remarks at African Union‘s 1st Sub-Committee on Tax and Illicit Financial Flows, I highlighted the importance of countries contributing to the continent’s Tax Strategy. It is historic that this is the first time we have a platform that harmonises tax policies in the continent. I have been privileged to work with African Tax Administration Forum (ATAF) in providing technical support to this process, and it warms my heart that these reforms are being actualised.

ALFRED AKIBO-BETTS is the Founder and Chief Executive Officer of The Betts Firm, a tax,
accounting and business advisory consultancy firm he formed in 2019. He is a Chartered
Accountant and a Fellow of the Association of Certified Chartered Accountants of the United
Kingdom and the Institute of Chartered Accountants of Sierra Leone. He holds an Honours
Bachelor’s Degree in Accounting and Finance from Fourah Bay College, University of Sierra
Leone, and a Master’s Degree in Taxation from the University of Pretoria in South Africa. He
is also an alumnus of Harvard University holding a Certificate in Comparative Tax Policy and
Administration.
Alfred is an internationally renowned Tax Expert, with over sixteen years of experience having
worked in senior positions at the National Revenue Authority (Sierra Leone’s tax authority)
attaining the Deputy Commissioner position. At the National Revenue Authority, he was
notably in charge of the implementation of the Goods and Services Tax. Alfred also works
internationally as a Tax Expert for the IMF, World Bank, African Tax Administration Forum and
international consultancy firms.
In addition to his professional work, Alfred has a passion for the growth of entrepreneurship
in Sierra Leone having various investments interests in the real estate, energy, infrastructure,
information technology and education sectors, including a Co-Founder of Freetown Business
School. Alfred’s experience in public and private sectors in Sierra Leone for close to two
decades enables him to easily navigate the intricate regulatory and business environment in
the country.
At The Betts Firm, his team serve a wide range of clients locally and internationally in the
manufacturing, energy, logistics, services, travel, general merchandise and financial services sector.
